It’s been so cold here the past two days that it’s as if we just shot directly into winter. It’s like a twisted Season Monopoly turn, where you’re stuck with that card that tells you to go to winter, go directly into winter, do not pass fall, and save that $200 for heating oil.
This has been one strange year, weather-wise. I’ve traveled out of the country twice, visiting places in different sides of the globe, all during their so-called summer season, only to be inundated with relentless rain both times. Even the summer here in the Northeast has been uncharacteristically rainy and cool. It was like summer never even existed. Friends who have lived in this area their entire life have all said that they can’t recall a summer like this. Ever.
Now, with the sudden cold air and early darkness, it seems like we might be skipping fall as well.
And so, because fall is too lovely a season to just breeze through, I thought I’d post this photo that I took this past “summer.” I love this shot because, well, for some reason (which I’m sure is probably silly and inaccurate), it looks like an autumn shot to me.
Dear Autumn,
You don’t know me, but I’m a big fan. Please don’t skip our neighborhood. Come and stay awhile. I’ll make you pumpkin spice coffee if you do.
But feel free to leave Ragweed home. He doesn’t have to come visit with you. Really.
Thank you.

I love this photo but I HATE that it’s fall (winter?) already.
I love living in the Northeast because I usually adore the change of seasons. This season, not at all. Just when the summer started to show a bit of promise, it was over. Our *true* summer lasted, what? Three weeks? And then back to damp and cool, and gray. And that is on the heels of the longest winter I can ever remember. Winter lasted 6 solid months so there is much dread in facing another 6 (8?) months of winter already. Ugh. We still haven’t gone apple picking…trying to hold off the fact that it’s autumn. I don’t even want to SEE a pumpkin (unless it’s in a pie, then I’ll make an exception.) I hate my shoes and socks…preferring freezing wet toes in flipflops, refusing to give in to the inevitable. Ugh Ugh Ugh!
Okay, now…..my little whining wahwahwah is over.
Keeping things in perspective, at least I have shoes and socks, and a warm, dry roof over my head. My family is healthy and whole, and I have much to be thankful for. I will try to remember that during this looooong, cold neverending season of gloom. ;)
The allergies have been contributing mightily to my overall exhaustion. That is a beautiful photograph. I love the light and the softness of the background.
Hut & KD,
I totally agree. I’m still mourning the loss of the little bit of summer we had. I scroll through my summer vacation pictures from time to time trying to absorb some sunshine. I was lucky enough to be on the beach in Maine during the 2 nice weeks of summer that we did have. I’m not giving up the chance for a decent fall just yet! Still waiting to go apple picking for my favorite kind of apples that you can only get this time of year (macouns). Like you KD, I’m still wearing my sandals to work cuz I can’t bear the thought of putting the socks and shoes that I wear for so many months back on again.
Hut, the light through the thistle-y flower in this shot is beautiful.
Great shot, but it makes me want to sneeze!
It has been very cold here too! I normally like fall! Our average temps are supposed to be in the 60s and we are barely into the 40s. I just want to stay in bed all day.
I am glad you are back state-side though!
Just when I thought we’d never see sun again, yesterday was a beautiful fall day with sun and warmth. Even got to mow my lawn today after a month of rain and travel.
Remember, we all have Indian Summer to look forward to. The crunch of fall leaves. And cobalt blue skies.
We call it Autumn but yes, I too love it!!! Of course its the other end of the year for us, and hovers right around my birthday (which should scare me these days, but doesn’t!). Our Summer started mid-winter this year – its like the Earth has tilted a little more on it’s axis and mucked with our seasons, isn’t it??
Great shot (of course!)
:-)

I know exactly what you mean.
We had 3 weeks of warm dry weather at the end of august and into september. I ask you, what do you do with a plus 30 degree day (celcius) in september? When the Outdoor pool is closed? Its just a waste, I tell you. Then 3 days later I needed to send the girls to school with coats and long sleeves and gloves. On picture day. The cool weather clothes were all still packed away. It figures.
p.s. I think its the gray skies that make it look Autumn-y.
in the cold with you, Crystal
Cold schmold…that photo is hot! I love the selective focus. I am so frustrated that I can’t get tac sharp like that. Beauty work.
Just wondering if you could tell me what camera you use? Do you have a post or section on what equipment you are using and I just missed it?
Mmmm…nice shot! Wish the “macro” function on my point-and-shoot worked so nicely. Actually, I just wish it worked. So far I can’t tell a difference when I use it! I’m beginning to think the “option” is there just to tease me. (Of course, there’s always the possibility of user error; better review the manual!)
I hope you get to experience a bit of fall weather!

So very true! We are in Iowa and it seems we never had a real summer here either.
Autumn has a nicer ring to it than fall.
The weather people say we are about 20 degrees cooler than normal also. I do hope this is not a pattern for the months ahead.
Great shot there!
It’s November now and we just a blast of Indian Summer last weekend. Hope you got to enjoy it!
BTW, I am running a new assignment and it’s about November. Hope you all come over to look and, hopefully, participate. It’s a lot of fun!
Hi everyone! Sorry to acknowledge the comments so late. Been quite busy. And by quite, I mean something like Niagara Falls. :)
Pumpkin Spice coffee? My favorite! How did you know?
