Which one?

One of these photos was taken with a Canon. One was taken with a Nikon.

One was taken with a point-and-shoot (the S5). The other with a DSLR (the new D90) and its kit lens (55-200 mm VR).

I’m not going to ask you to tell me which is which. But I will ask you to tell me if you prefer one over the other.

.

Both were taken with my Raynox DCR-250.

Have I mentioned how much I love that little piece of glass?

Addendum: Because I’m all about exacting details bored out of my mind watching the snow fall outside, here’s a third photo. Just because.

And now, back to your regular scheduled snowfall. Sorry for the interruption.

Hmm, I think I like the first one. It’s color is warmer. But the second one is gorgeous too.

    I don’t think I can choose!

I love them both, they each have aspects that I like but if I had to choose one over the other it’d be the first one. It’s less washed out.

I like the top one. more vibrancy the better!

I really like the addendum! – the buds frame the flower and I like the light coming from the bokeh background…and then the paler flower with the soft pink.

Of the first 2…like the others, hard choice – things I like about each, but if I have to pick, I pick the first – for the more intense color contrast – green on the flower petals, brighter buds.

All three are great shots…I pick the second one out of the first two. I like the lighting in that one and how the buds surrounding the bloom seem to stand out and kiss the glass.

Of all three, the addendum is my total favorite…the colors n contrast are stellar and the buds still appear to kiss the glass.

You are going to tell us which was taken by which, aren’t you?!? Just outta curiosity…

I was immediately drawn to the first one. It has much more detail and more beautiful color.

The third one is nice too, but it has a totally different DOF so I can’t compare to the first two.

Are you gonna tell us which is which?

    The addendum is my #1
The 2nd one is my #2 due to the fun subdued color

What I’ve always liked about your Canon shots was the fact that they looked like Nikon shots; i.e. vivid and crisp.

Pictures from normal photographers, one can tell the difference. You’re not normal :) (I mean that as a compliment).
That’s why I keep coming back to your site to look at your pictures. I own Canon and keep wondering “How does she do it?”. Your “how-to’s” on PW’s site are my favorite…

    Happy New Year!

I’d have to go for the second one. I seems crisper to me.

I think I’m in the minority, (along with Shawn), that of the original 2, I like the 2nd one better. I agree that it is “crisper” – sharper. The addendum combines the qualities of the first 2 – more of the green from number 1 with the sharpness of the flower to left of number 2.

I just discovered yoru Blog and it is fast becoming one of my faves! Beautiful photographs!

As for the comparision, I would definately choose number 2 – I like the sharpness, the color desaturation and since you can never get away from the emotional attachment to photographs, I feel a bit melancholy today and it the second photo reflects my mood!

Thanks for sharing – and do please let us know which is which!!

I love that you just posted it, because I now own my first SLR – the Nikon D60. But I don’t want to stop loving my point and shoot, a Canon S3. It takes great close ups but the landscapes were grainy.

I love the first one, because I love the greens and yellows that show through.

I like the 1st one. I like more color.

I have just stumbled upon your website from PW.

I’m really excited that you use the Canon S5. I just got a Canon Powershot SX10IS. I was floundering between that and the Canon SLR but economically went with the powershot. I am really hoping I can get some professional looking photos with this camera if I learn to use it right.

I’m not a macro kind of girl though. My favorite subject matter is people and then probably landscapes. What do you think about this camera for that stuff?

I’m a vivid color fan. So it would have to be the top one.

Also, congrats on your cross-out! You certainly earned it.

And last but not least, best wishes for the coming year, may you get published many more times!

The third…I prefer the color over number 2 and also it has more brightness than number 1 without losing clarity.

Hey yeah! So are you going to tell us which is which???

I think I prefer the first one…the color is richer…but something tells me that the color on the second one is truer…am I correct? Now I’ll go back and read everyone elses comments. :)

First, hello to the new commenters! Nice to see you here.

Wow, really interesting comments! Here’s the cheat sheet that tells you which is which.

    Was it what you expected?

Heee…. I did ok on #1 – Canon and #2 Nikon but I thought the addendum was one or the other Photoshopped… Wow, the Nikon, Vivid, eh – pretty potent!

However…I have the new Rebel XSi and it allows for customization of the “picture styles” – to boost contrast, color, sharpness and one other thing… I think I’m getting some great color saturation at my most “vivid” customized setting…but

I’d like to get my hands on Nikon and do a compare… unless you’d like a road trip to Northwest Montana, IvoryHut???

I like the first one. Which camera took which?

Being that I’ve had both (had Canon S5, got D90 for Christmas), I can wager a guess as to which photo was taken with which… XD Out of the first two, I prefer the second one. I like the “bland” colors for those flowers, and there’s something that looks a little bit like noise in the first one.

Overall, though, I prefer the third one.

    I like the first one.

Ok, I’m late to this, but I promise, I’ve not looked at the cheat sheet. I prefer #2. Not so much because of crispness, but of color. I like the lighter petals of the main flowers, and the buds are just a lot more pronounced.

Love coming to your site. Happy New Year!

Gosh! Maybe I do prefer Nikons! I hope my Canons are around to hear that!

I like the top one better. Better color, it’s crisper, it’s clearer. Artistically I like the second one too, but it would drive me mad to lose the clarity of color and detail when going for a macro shot (although maybe because I suck at macro in the first place). I am going to guess that top is Nikon and bottom is Canon? I remember the comparison on PW’s site and the “smoky” quality of her Canon shots really comes through in the bottom (I mean second) picture.
Now spill the beans and tell us, pretty please?

Okay, just read through the comments and found the cheat sheet… aaahhh… nothing like feeling like an idiot. Luckily though, I’m used to it.
But really, all your macro shots are beautiful. I still like the Nikon better though – because the third shot was my very favorite.

The last one is my favorite! It just seems more colorful and in focus.
I use Canon PowerShot point and shoot. I’ve had it for 1.5 years and still don’t know all the features it includes :)

Ok, so I scrolled down to look for the answer… I love the first one for the color… but the 2nd one is just really pretty… One I would frame… I’m a nut for b&w prints though…

I got a Canon G11… Love it… but was wondering if you’ve ever used a screw on lens with your point and shoot? I’m considering it, but have no clue about the kind to look at.

Hi Holly! I posted the cheat sheet in one of my comments above. I the only screw on lens I’ve used with my point-and-shoot is a regular 50mm lens that was reversed onto the lens adapter, using a reverse macro adapter. I used the method to do my first macros, until I got the Raynox DCR-50. The Raynox clips on using an included universal adapter.
