More of the mystery plant

Remember these mystery flowers from a few days back?

To help identify it, here are some non-macro shots of the entire plant. Please, no comments about the water spots on my vase. They already gave me half an hour of grief as I was viewing the shots earlier.

Here is a closer view of the leaves. They’re a bit fleshy and have a snap to it. I know that because I broke a few of them. Shhhh. Don’t tell anyone.

And finally, here’s a shot to give you an idea of the size of the plant. Yes, that bottle there is purely for scale. It’s not open, and it doesn’t have less than a third of its contents left inside. Nope nope. It’s there in the name of science and the pursuit of accurate nomenclature of botanical species.

I heard the tannins from red wine can help individuals recall all the big words they learned in college. Even those they memorized for a few hours late at night cramming for an exam the next day.

But of course, I wouldn’t know anything about that.

I’ve called in my personal plant expert – my mom! I have emailed her this picture and we’ll see what happens! I learned everything I know about plants from her.

Mom says it looks like a kalonchoa. That name is a new one on me. Never heard of it.

Okay, I just tried googling Mom’s plant name and found nothing. So I tried playing around with similar spellings in a plant finder catalog and found “kalanchoe” – it seems to have those very thick leaves like yours and lots of tiny flowers. Here’s a link to a picture of one I found on the ‘net:

Karma, a gajillion points to your mom! Yes, it is indeed a kalanchoe. And I am feeling sheepish here because, well, we had a lot of these back in the Philippines. Also, I didn’t think to ask my mom, who knows the plant well and would have been able to identify it immediately.

Shrew is cracking me up here. I think she still has her head stuck in Gordo’s realm. ;)

God, that word was on the tip of my tongue for days now! Glad Karma called our mom. She would know – she gave me one of those in college and I sort of forgot it in my dorm room for all of winter break and killed it. Mom didn’t think it was very funny!

There are a plethora of these down south. I have a very nice coral colored one.

about me

I write, cook, play music, and make pictures. Not necessarily in that order. I was born and raised in the Philippines, and it shows. That means I eat rice with every meal, love my cousins like my own siblings, and firmly believe that avocados are best eaten with cream and sugar.

If you want to learn more about me, here are 43 things I'd like to do. Here's a little something about my name, in case you were wondering. Here are some other places you'll find me:
