Three cents

orange tulip

One of the great things about supermarket anniversary specials is that you can get a bunch of seven tulips for twenty cents. That’s less than three cents a tulip.

(I initially wanted to photograph the bunch, but I happen to be the world’s worst floral arranger. I thought I’d spare you the visual.)

Another moon

almost full moon (Project365 20080125)

I … I … I just couldn’t resist. It looked so beautiful up there in the sky. How could I not take its picture?

One thing I’ll say about this Canon Powershot S5. For a non-DSLR, it sure does a great job taking photos of the moon.

Oh, and I didn’t venture outside for this. I’m growing tired of getting sick so much during the cold months. Like a winter sissy, I held my camera up against the window and shot this from the comfort of my kitchen. Which had heated tile floors. I wasn’t a complete wimp, though. I did have to balance myself on a chair.

Please tell me that counts for something.

Astrolomeria

astrolomeria (Project365 200801224)

This is an astrolomeria. Try saying that three seventy-two times, really fast.

Today I had the pleasure if seeing my mom’s reaction after seeing her new car parked right by the entrance of the dealership. The folks at Hudson Honda were absolutely a delight to work with, from General Sales Manager Johnny Rivas to sales associate Yirko Salgado. I’m telling you, if every car buying experience could be as painless as this one, I’d be buying new cars left and right. I’d be miles deep in debt and couldn’t afford insurance or gas or food for the next twenty-seven years, but at least the buying wouldn’t pain me.

Everything was done via email and on the phone, and the first time we stepped into the dealership was simply to sign the paperwork. The one-day delay in getting the car was because apparently, there are only a handful of black coupes available in the state. They had to go almost 40 miles to another dealership to make a trade. Who knew they’d be that popular?

I tried to take a photo of the car, but that newly-detailed Nighthawk Black Pearl finish on the car just reflected all sorts of things that I couldn’t get a decent shot of it. In hindsight, what I probably should have done was document that precious smile on my mom’s face as she stood there admiring it. But I was too busy hugging her. I think I chose the better portion.

So that’s why the photo for today is, instead, that macro shot of an astrolomeria. It was part of this beautiful floral arrangement adorning the lobby of my mom’s place where we waited for Yirko to pick us up and take us to the dealership to collect the car. (It’s nice being pampered like that.) I was happy to have a willing subject to photograph, and with the cold wind whipping outside, there’s nothing like a huge vase of beautiful flowers to soften the bite of winter.

But in case you’re wondering, here’s a photo of my mom’s new car. Which will probably make my earlier statement about buying cars left and right a bit more understandable.

If it came with a DSLR as standard equipment, I might be driving one home myself.

Lunar exploration

Just a brief note here. The photo I shot of the moon for my Project 365 the other day got included in Flickr’s Explore page for Jan 22!

(Flickr’s Explore page for the day supposedly displays the 500 most interesting shots uploaded that day. Don’t ask me how they choose the shots, because I’ve seen a lot of awesome photos that don’t get picked. It’s some sort of “interestingness” algorithm that takes into account views, comments, number of times “favorited” by others, etc. I’m just glad they likely had a technical glitch somewhere and somehow accidentally included my photo in there.)

Woohoo! I’m #191, nope make that #101 now, I think. It’s here for now (the rankings can change at any time), and I’m in the middle there somewhere. (See update below.) I find it so funny that here I am sooo into macro and stuff, and yet the three photos of mine that have made it to Flickr’s Explore page are all shots of the moon. Which is so the opposite of macro. Go figure!

Update: I removed the link for my photo in the Explore page because it’s a dynamically-changing thing and I realize now the folly of trying to put a link to a specific page when it can likely get changed even before my post is updated. Sorry about that. You know me. I aim to confuse.

But in case you were, the highest position it reached was #12 on Wednesday, January 23, 2008. Goodness. I’m speechless.

On the road again

on the road again

I’m such a bad example for drivers. I really am.

Please don’t be me.

Thank you.

about me

I write, cook, play music, and make pictures. Not necessarily in that order. I was born and raised in the Philippines, and it shows. That means I eat rice with every meal, love my cousins like my own siblings, and firmly believe that avocados are best eaten with cream and sugar.

If you want to learn more about me, here are 43 things I'd like to do. Here's a little something about my name, in case you were wondering. Here are some other places you'll find me:
