A photo for brc

In my previous post, brc so perfectly echoed my feelings when she said:

I have to say that I’m finding this whole macro thing to be almost a religious experience. Since I figured out how to use that setting on my camera I’m awestruck at what I see on the computer. The details in nature are truly amazing.

Yes indeed. When I take macro shots – especially the super macro ones – I’m in awe of the wonderful colors and textures and the exquisite beauty in things and creatures so small that most of the world may not even notice their existence, let alone see and appreciate them in their glory.

Sometimes, I feel like I’m cheating. It feels like, how in the world can someone completely mess up taking a photo of something so stunning? I’m not drawn to try and frame it so that I’m telling a story, because frankly, the sheer wonder of what I see leaves me speechless. And it’s hard to tell a story when words escape us.

Yesterday, I went to take more pictures of the flowers and, as I mentioned, there were a few unexpected bees and a few bugs that decided to join the photo shoot. Now, ordinarily, I wouldn’t be coming up so close to a bug, but hey, I had a camera. Which is a good thing, because then I would have missed this shot.

How pretty is that bug? It looks like someone went and created this intricate batik design on its back in these luscious tones of blue.

The rampant and often surprising beauty in nature never ceases to amaze me. When you immerse yourself in it, it becomes, truly, a religious experience.

I’m completely in awe. Who would ever expect to see such breathtaking beauty in a minute bug on a flower? As soon as I get a new camera, the first lens I’m going to buy is a macro lens. Thanks for sharing this!

Wow that bug is so cool! After looking at your shots here and from yesterday, I feel so inferior! I have seen those “spoon” flowers before – I love that 2-tone look to them. And is that a droplet of water reflecting the sky down front? Simply awesome!

Shrew, I am floored by your comment. My Flickr page has the photos that I like (believe me, there are tons more in my hard drive that I don’t think are Flickr-worthy). My best hope is that others kinda like looking at them too. But I have no expectation that they might have the same effect on someone else as other people’s photography has on me, which is mainly a gut reaction. Thanks for saying that.

I’ll post something about what I use, and the processing I do at the moment. I say ‘at the moment’ because I’m still a newbie with Photoshop and feeling my way around. On my own. Without a flashlight.

Karen, don’t feel inferior! Seriously, with macro shots, half the time, the viewfinder (well, the LCD screen) rewards me with a surprise more beautiful than I had expected. Or, in other words, it’s halfway accidental. Like that drop in that flower, which I didn’t really even pay much attention to before you mentioned it.

about me

I write, cook, play music, and make pictures. Not necessarily in that order. I was born and raised in the Philippines, and it shows. That means I eat rice with every meal, love my cousins like my own siblings, and firmly believe that avocados are best eaten with cream and sugar.

If you want to learn more about me, here are 43 things I'd like to do. Here's a little something about my name, in case you were wondering. Here are some other places you'll find me:
