As if to make it even more final, a stripped down look to the Gray Charles site signaled that this was really the end. The man who inspired so many of us to re-discover music with a healthy dose of intelligent humor and snark has closed shop with these words:
Do I owe someone an explanation? A story perhaps? A clean and tidy wrapping? I would suggest that the story and the explanation already happened didn’t it? We made it do what it do and now there’s just no more doing to be done.
So here’s a song for you, Gray, wherever you are. I hope we find you writing again somewhere.

There are memories you never go back to,
and those where you always return
there are fires you have to keep tending,
and those that just know how to burn.

Thanks for this wonderful song.. But what is the name of it and who’s singing? Much appreciation..
Hi Laurita! That was Cosy Sheridan singing “Some Fires” from her Grand Design album released in 1998. It’s always been a personal favorite of mine.
cool.. i just found on Amazon a new Live in Concert album of hers released last September which has this song on it, so I bought a new/used CD.. looking forward to it.. Gracias for turning me/us on to her music.. ;-)
p.s. i really like your site a lot.. only found you today while cruising around MonkBot and other sites, mourning the ‘eminent demise’ of GC.com… take care, lauri
Aww. Thank you for saying that, Lauri. Hope you’ll pop in now and then.
Now it’s my turn to check out that live album. Thanks for the heads up!
hi again,
my Cosy Live CD arrived while I was at that meditation retreat over the weekend, and I just imported it to my iTunes today, to end up on the ole iPod eventually ..
Realized that what I wrote you previously was slightly incorrect: it’s not Live in “Concert”- it’s Live in a “barn/studio” with a bunch of friends and other lucky folks apparently.. so it’s sort of like a concert i guess, with intros to songs by Cosy, etc., but not like in a big club or “normal” venue.. no matter what, it’s awesome!
and thanks for all the great music you’ve posted and words and thoughts over the last days.. much sadness with the crashing and burning of gcdotcom.. just praying that Gray will find a good place to make a home for the GC Archives that all of us can visit for years to come.. there was so much I didn’t have time to check out in past months, that I was really looking forward to between semesters..
any thoughts on the future of those archives?
be well, lauri
Lauri, I checked out the CD and it was indeed a “barn/studio” recording done while she was involved with the production of The Pomegranate Seed. Glad to hear you’re giving it a rave review. I love acoustic music done in intimate settings, too.
No thoughts on that second point, sorry.
